Corporate History
Since it's beginning, Safealert Systems' ATM911® Emergency Communications
System has been installed on every major brand of automatic teller
machine (ATM). Several hundred of the ATM911® communications
systems have been installed for financial institutions in 30 states
and in Washington, D.C.
The first unit was installed at Keesler Federal
Credit Union, in Biloxi, Mississippi. David Hines, a former police
officer, was inspired to develop this security device after the
death of Janet McInturf. She was a sergeant stationed at Keesler
Air Force Base in Biloxi. She had stopped at the credit union's
ATM to get ten dollars for gas. Janet was accosted by two assailants
who made her withdraw more money at gun point. They then, shot her
in the chest. Mortally wounded, she got into her car and managed
to ram the robber's car as they tried to speed off. She died before
police arrived. Hines noticed that there was not a means of communication
at the site, or in the immediate vicinity, to call for help or to
report the crime. (Subsequently, two local teenagers were convicted
for her death.)
David Hines, recognized the need for emergency
communications at such ATM sites. With the help of NACOM, the ATM911®
Emergency Communications System was developed. The prototype was
installed the next month at the same ATM where the murder took place.
The ATM911® system was closely monitored for several months.
Based on the positive results of this test, and the great amount
of positive feedback from users/members, Keesler Federal Credit
Union decided to install the ATM911® Emergency Communications
System on all of it's ATM's.
Initially, the system developed did nothing more
than call the local 911 Dispatcher, who could hear all the sounds
and conversations taking place within twenty feet of the ATM. But
as use of the product expanded, improvements were developed in response
needs from different financial institutions and Police Jurisdictions.
Features such as the following, were added:
• Line Seizure - no separate telephone line
needed to operate
• ATM Access Card Activation - for high
traffic areas
• Bank Video Camera Coordination - record
audio on bank's video recorder
• Multiple ATM Operations on one ATM911®
system
• Financial institution's own Security Department
notification
