Security At Walkup ATMs:
Completely fill out all necessary paperwork (deposit slips, loan
payments, etc.) before approaching the ATM. Keep extra deposit envelopes
in your car, so you can fill them out before approaching the machine.
To safely deposit money in an ATM, count the money and complete
all the necessary paperwork before leaving for the ATM. Place all
currency (no coins) and/or checks in an ATM transaction envelope
and seal it. Conceal the envelope until you are ready to deposit
it in the ATM.
If possible, take another adult with you, especially at night.
The second person improves your security by staying alert to possible
danger while you are using the ATM.
If the ATM is obstructed from view or poorly lit, go to another
ATM. If you are using the ATM at night, make sure the ATM and area
is well lit. Some states have certain lighting requirements for
ATM areas. Report any lighting problems to the financial institution
responsible.
Always observe your surroundings before conducting an ATM transaction.
If you are driving to an ATM, your car door should be locked when
entering the site. Park as close to the terminal as possible. Just
because you plan to make a quick stop, do not leave your car running
or the keys in it. Look the whole area over before getting out from
the safety of your car. If you see anyone or anything that seems
to be suspicious (like someone just standing around or many people
in a nearby car but no one at the ATM), cancel your transaction
and leave immediately, if the ATM that you are using does not have
a 911 button. If your ATM has a 911 button, and there is a possible
emergency, call the 911 Dispatcher by pushing the button on the
machine or go ahead and leave the area. If you feel like something
is "just not right" and the ATM you want to use in not
equipped with a 911 button, then play it safe and go to another
ATM. Do not take unnecessary chances by continuing your transaction.
You could be placing yourself at greater risk of injury and/or robbery.
If other people are present at the ATM when you arrive, stay in
your car. Remain in your car, with the doors locked, until you are
alone. Be sure to lock your car when you get out of it, but keep
your keys handy so you can get back into it quickly, if you need
to.
If the ATM is in use, give the person using it privacy. Should
you choose not to wait in the car and a line is present at the ATM,
give adequate space to the person using the machine. If someone
is close to you, then ask them to step back. If they do not, then
go to your vehicle and wait until that person leaves or go to another
ATM. Always wait for a person using a machine to leave, before approaching
the terminal.
Minimize time spent at the ATM. Have paperwork and ATM Access
Card ready when you reach the ATM, so that you won't have to reach
into your purse or wallet. By having the Access Card in your hand
and ready to use, your transaction will be quicker and safer.
Stand between the ATM and anyone waiting to use it, so that others
cannot see your PIN or function. Use your body to block or shield
the ATM's keyboard as you punch in your transaction. Also, to withdraw
money from an ATM, stand in a manner that blocks or shields the
cash outlet that is dispensing the money from someone else's view.
By doing so, you can prevent others from seeing how much money you
received. Remember, that the capacity of today's optics makes it
feasible for someone to read the numbers that you punch in from
a great distance away.
Never count or let other people see your money while standing
at the ATM. Immediately put the money in pocket or purse. Return
to the safety of your car or another private place before counting
your money and recording the transaction.
To make a deposit. Take out the conceal, prepared envelope, and
insert it into the deposit inlet as instructed on the ATM or envelope.
Remember, never visually expose how much money you are going to
deposit.
Remember to always take your Access Card, cash, and receipt before
you leave the ATM. Never leave the receipt of your transaction at
the ATM. It contains your account number and other important account
information.
Do not accept help from strangers while using an ATM. If you have
problems, contact the bank. If you see anyone or anything suspicious
while conducting a transaction, cancel your transaction and immediately
leave (if the ATM you are using does not have a 911 button). If
your ATM has a 911 button, and there is a possible emergency, call
the 911 Dispatcher by pushing the button on the machine.
When you leave an ATM. Watch carefully for people following you
or approaching you. If you are being followed, go to the nearest
store, business, restaurant, or place where other people are present.
If someone follows you in a car, drive to the nearest Police Station
or some place where others are present.
Remember to call and report all crimes to the ATM owner and local
law enforcement officers immediately, if the ATM you used is not
equip with a 911 button.
